We travel 80 kilometers from Calafate and we arrive to this glacier of 80 metres high and 3 km² of surface. It was formed 30 years ago. This is the only glacier of the world that divides a lake in two: Argentinean Lake. This causes a difference in the level of the water and, for that reason, a strong pressure that breaks the ice every 4 years approximately; this moment is one of the most wonderful spectacles of the world and it normally happens in spring - summer. This excursion includes watching from land and different places; it is possible to make a nautical safari through the Icebergs Channel where people can enjoy a new vision from water, in front of the glacier; it is also possible to do trekking, walking upon the glacier with special equipment after a short navigation, a perfect moment to know physical appearance, flora and fauna of this place. |
Leaving Calafate and going to Punta Bandera, including navigation to the North arm of Argentinean Lake, we find the biggest glacier of all, the Upsala (an incredible mass of 50 kilometers long). |
