The relief of Chubut is irregular. The Andes Patagónicos are at West. In the center of the province and at East, there is an uneven plateau with declivity to the sea, fluvials, valleys, deep streams, depressions and a few isolated elevations.
The Andes Patagónicos are like chains of mountains. The height and lowest limit of snow of those mountains decrease from North to South and they are sectioned by transverse valleys with glacial lakes, like Puelo, General Vintter, La Plata and Fontana.
The plateau has a crystaline base that belongs to the massif named Patagónico, mostly considered of paleozoic origin. It was produced by continuous movements, followed by marine transgressions and regressions; it was also affected by the Terciary movement, which produced faults, dislocation and deposition of big basalt casts. It is covered by marine and continental sediment and volcanic rocks. In many places it is also covered by what we know as rodados patagónicos (posibly glacial origin). This plateau ends in the Argentinean Sea, where it forms a cliff more than 80 meters high.
Montemayor, Pampa de Salamanca, Pampa del Castillo and Pampa de Gastre are plateaus that stand out in the territory as well as fluvial terraces placed between the riverbed of the rivers and the plateaus. The valleys follow a predominant direction from West to East and in some places they are very deep, crossed over by rivers. Some ravines, ancient fluvial valleys with flat bottom, may have water in certain periods of time.
The depressions of Valdés are in the homonymous peninsula, 40 meters depth under the sea level, and the depression of Sarmiento is occupied bye the lakes Musters and Colhué-Huapi. Both depressions stand out between other lowlands of this region. Other depressed zones are often occupied by salt mines or temporary lagoons.
A group of mountains extended from North to South at the West side of meridian 69° W, which are part of the System of Patagónides, interrupt the plateau and it extends almost to 46° S. Generally, mountains of Taquetrén, Tecka, del Telégrafo, Buen Pasto and San Bernardo do not exceed the 1300 meters.
